if islam is so mercyfull why is it ok to kill in the name of alah? wouldnt it be mercy to try to reach people instead of eliminate them? how can you justify a god who is willing to tell his people to kill in his name but be merycfull it makes no sence. plus the bible was written many years before. adam in tx

the lord never told anybody to kill men made that choice. and in the old testament they went to war becouse those people would have killed them not to ruin a civilization becouse they dont believe in your god! adam from tx

It’s absolutely preposterous to state that Islam is peaceful–just read the Koran. The Hadith is even worse !!!

Surah 2:190-194: Fight in the cause of Allah against those who fight you…and kill them wherever you catch them…if they fight you, kill them. Such is the reward of those who suppress the Faith…And fight them on until there is no more tumult or oppression, and there prevail justice and faith in Allah.

Surah 2:216: Fighting is prescribed for you

Surah 2:244: Fight in the cause of Allah

Surah 4:74: Let those who fight in the cause of Allah, who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter, to him who fighteh in the cause of Allah…Soon shall We give him a reward of great value.

Surah 4:89: If they turn apostates, seize them and kill them wherever you find them.

Surah 4:91: Seize them and kill them wherever you get them.

Surah 5:33: The punishment of those who wage war against Allah and his apostle…they shall be slaughtered, or crucified , or their hands and feet shall be struck off alternately, or they shall be banished from the land.

Surah 5:51: O ye who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends.

The Old Testament has DESCRIPTIONS of violence.

The Koran has PRESCRIPTIONS for violence….a huge difference !!!!!

I believe Islam is a peaceful religion, and many Muslims are peaceful people, but I have a question for the Dr.

Dr. Ali Shehata, why is there such a lack of condemnation for Islamic extremists, especially here in the US? When we heard about the Fort Dix Six, why didn’t a CAIR representative, or any Islamic leader for that matter, go on CNN, FOX, or any national program and publicly condemn what they were planning to do. Do peaceful Muslims not realize that silence is the same as acceptance?

  8. Anonymous said

It is a LIE from the pit of HELL to say that Islam is a peaceful religion.

    Islam is intrinsically violent–why beheadings?

Because Mohammed himself beheaded hundreds of Jews.

He set the example—followed to this day—of violence !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Only a victim of self-deception could look at the worold today and conclude that Islam is a peaceful religion.

    Islam–peaceful? What a joke !!!!!!!!

Jesus came also with war: “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn “a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law–a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.” (Matthew 10:34-36) In the context of Jesus bring justice and defending God’s Law so did Muhammad. The subject matter of this discourse is whether Islam is a source of violence.

Since many like to judge a faith by its adherents though this is not a holistic approach to this question ,where do you find the supposed brigandry, hostility, boiled over hate amongst the everday muslims past and present.

The claim that Prophet Muhammad (may peace be upon him) was a teacher and instigater of hate and violence is not reflected by the everday Muslims who devout followers of Muhammad’s messege

We have to fair and objective in our arguments. If Islam is a relion of no peace then I guess the prison should be full of Muslims bu they aren’t. We need to calm down

All i have to say is, don’t judge a religion by its misguided followers. Its easy to take a verse of the Koran and saying of Prophet Muhammad out of context, but where is the WISDOM in that? If you are SINCERE,go research Islaam from TRUE MUSLIMS, not from the news, or a misguided Muslim. and May God guide u.

That’s very true, religions change from how they began, but I’m still concerned that there aren’t public condemnations of terrorist behavior by Muslim leaders in America. It’s as if they accept it. I know that’s not the case, so American Muslims really need to step up to the plate and make themselves acceptable instead of just asking ot be accepted.

Christians have been killing people in the name of Christ since quite early as well due to distortions and I don’t think too many Jews or Muslims benefitted from the “turn the other cheek” approach. I don’t think it is really fair to try to represent only Islam as one which battled “in the name of God” when the Children of Israel waged war for centuries and then Christians did the same for several hundred years continuing into today under the guise of secularism.

  27. Anonymous said

Muslims have condemned a number of the ruthless and vicious attacks perpetrated in the name of Islam for quite some time now (I myself have done so as have many Islamic centers in the US) yet these condemnations often get shifted to some small section in the middle of a newspaper.

Blaming “Islam” for the crimes of misguided and ignorant Muslims is no better than blaming Christianity for abortion clinic bombings, the Crusades, the Inquisition, the KKK, the wholesale rape and molestation of so many children not only in Catholicism but in fact in every denomination … shall I go on? Trying to blame a religion for the misguided acts of some of adherants is fundamentally flawed no matter where you look.

The fairest and most just approach would be to judge a religion by what it says IN CONTEXT and as it is understood by the majority of a religion’s adherants.

As a casual listener I find many of the comments on this blog anything but merciful or in line with Biblical teachings. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone politely and in a civil way and attacking and offending others. I think some people really have a lot to learn about mercy and civility.

If you read my book you will get a very detailed analysis of this issue (Demystifying Islam) of Isaac and Ishmael but in brief it doesn’t make sense to me that in the Bible it says that Abraham wanted to sacrifice his first-borne son but then it talks about Isaac when it is clear the Ishmael was the firstborn. Those who say that he was illegitimate clearly didn’t see the verse where it says that Abraham took Hajar as a wife. Furthermore, the sign of the covenant of God to Abraham was circumcision and it also clearly says that Ishmael was circumcized. I hope this helps a little …

i believe you find these comments un-civil because most Christians are sick and tired of being misunderstood and pushed around by people preaching tolerance…it’s time to stand up for THE TRUTH!

  34. Dr. Ali Shehata said

In the Quran it states the Abraham was commanded to sacrifice Ishmael. It also discusses the great blessings bestowed upon Isaac who was the father of the 12 tribes (12 princes?) of Israel.

  35. Anonymous said

Frustrated about being misunderstood? Try living a few days in the shoes of a Muslim! Nonetheless, this is hardly an excuse for attacking others and behaving so rude. It also makes “the truth” you speak of look so much more tarnished.

  36. Allen Hunt said

I appreciate Dr. Shehata’s willingness to share his point of view and listen to mine. I am deeply troubled by the facts I shared, like the violent history of Mohammed himself. Those cannot be so easily dismissed as “not true.”

Read an objective history of Islam. Not one written by Christians or Muslims. Facts are facts, and the fact is Islam was borne in violence.

That does not mean all Muslims are violent. Many Muslims are kind, generous, and compassionate. It does mean that they must deal honestly with the violent roots of their faith.

At the same time, Christians should respond in love. Not hatred or violence. There is enough of that in the world already.

But we must deal with facts rather than opinions.

  37. sherri said

Islam has spread all over the world. Indonesia is now a Muslim country and it certainly did not become a Muslim country by the sword rather it was through trade caravans. Many Americans convert to Islam along with Europeans and Asians. Although there are certainly no muslim conquests going on today.
The terrorists do not speak for me. I denounce terrorism in all its forms whether they are Christian terrorists (Waco, tx 1993, recent VA tech shooting), Jewish terrorists, Muslim terrorists, Buddist terrorists etc. It is all WRONG and HORRIFIC. It is not Islam.

Islam is not a terroristic religion. Islam was not spread by the sword. The muslims during the time of Muhammad were opressed and suffered much torture at the hands of the idoletors and pagans. The Muslims initially did not fight back. However, later Allah revealed to the Muslims that it was time that they could fight back against their opressors. However, there was VERY CLEAR ground rules for fighting back. This is mentioned in the Qur’an:

To those against whom war is made, permission is given (to fight), because they are wronged;- and verily, Allah is most powerful for their aid;-
(They are) those who have been expelled from their homes in defiance of right,- (for no cause) except that they say, “our Lord is Allah.. Did not Allah check one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause);- for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). (Quran :22-39)
You can also see the rules for fighting those people forbade killing women, children, elderly, or anyone who wasn’t fighting against them directly. Also it was forbidden to damage buildings or trees.
    Saheeh Muslim
    Book 019, Hadith Number 4320
Chapter : Prohibition of killing women and children in war
It is narrated by Ibn ‘Umar that a woman was found killed in one of these battles; so the Messenger of Allah (may peace be upon him) forbade the killing of women and children.
And he also said: Whoever has killed a person having a treaty with the Muslims shall not smell the fragrance of Paradise, though its fragrance is found for a span of forty years.(Muslim)

Also, the Prophet Muhammad has forbidden punishment with fire(Muslim)
“And fight in the way of Allaah those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allaah likes not the transgressors”
    [al-Baqarah 2:190]

Suicide bombing is 100% un-islamic. The prophet Muhmammad said whoever kills himself will be in hell killing himself for eternity with whatever suicide method he or she used. (bukhari)

Secondly lets look at these verses of the Bible. Do they promote violence?
And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them (Deuteronomy 7:2)
When thou comest nigh unto a city to fight against it, then proclaim peace unto it.And it shall be, if it make thee answer of peace, and open unto thee, then it shall be, that all the people that is found therein shall be tributaries unto thee, and they shall serve thee.12And if it will make no peace with thee, but will make war against thee, then thou shalt besiege it:And when the LORD thy God hath delivered it into thine hands, thou shalt smite every male thereof with the edge of the sword:But the women, and the little ones, and the cattle, and all that is in the city, even all the spoil thereof, shalt thou take unto thyself; and thou shalt eat the spoil of thine enemies, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. But of the cities of these people, which the LORD thy God doth give thee for an inheritance, thou shalt save alive nothing that breatheth:But thou shalt utterly destroy them; namely, the Hittites, and the Amorites, the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; as the LORD thy God hath commanded thee (Deuteronomy 20:10-17)
Now therefore kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him.But all the women children, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. (numbers 31:17-18)
Do not think I (Jesus) have come to send peace, but a sword. (Matthew 10:34)

Look at the countries when Muslims did concur them they were still allowed to practice their relgion freely. The Muslims coincided with them peacefully. Lastly, Look at the words of Umar ibn Al Khattab on his deathbed after being killed by a non muslim:
Narrated ‘Amr bin Maimun: umar (after he was stabbed), instructed (his would-be-successor) saying, “I urge him (i.e. the new Caliph) to take care of those non-Muslims who are under the protection of Allah and His Apostle in that he should observe the convention agreed upon with them, and fight on their behalf (to secure their safety) and he should not over-tax them beyond their capability.” (Bukhari Book #52, Hadith #287)
Islam is a peaceful way of life and the only way of life that is complete. Before you argue or debate pick up a Quran read some hadiths or visit a Masjid. There are so many misconceptions about this way of life. In fact, I used to be one of the people who argued venemently against Islam and was well on my way to being a missionary. But once i started really learning islam. I came to realize that what i had been following was wrong and Islam was the only complete way of life for me. I never felt the feeling of being saved as a Christian but i will tell you honestly and sincerley when i took the shahada (islamic testimony of faith) I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders and I had a peace in my heart. Think about it at least practice what you preach and turn the other cheek instead of giving others a verbal pounding. Be open minded and open hearted and I am confident you will see the beauty of Islam.

  38. UmmZakariyya said

First, I was disappointed that Dr Ali Shehata was interupted and cut off so much in his explanations, I have read his book and he has much to offer in removing the misconceptions about Islam. I highly recommend anyone still left with concerns to get a copy of his book.

Secondly, there was comment of where are the peaceful clerics who openly condemn actions like 9/11, if you listened you would hear them, just as you would have heard Dr Ali. They have also experienced the same as Dr Ali, being cut off or ignored.

Much of what you see publicised in the media about the Muslims, are actions of Muslims and not an indication of what Islam teaches. Dr Ali is correct that the answer is education. Education of the Muslims and non Muslims about the true teachings of Islam.

We also have to be careful how the words “violence” and “war” are interchanged, as it seems that any reference to a war where the Muslims were involved is considered violence, however anything involving other nations or religions is described as war.
Islam is very clear in the rules of war. War is not initiated, it is in defence to oppression.
Fighting is always between the soldiers. (women, children and the old/sick are protected and are not to be harmed) Anyone who wants to really understand the history of the battles in the time of Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, should read the book “The Sealed Nectar”. It has a very detailed description of the battles and how they came about.

You will also find that the references in these blogs to the Qu’ran have been taken out of context, as with anything out of context, can be made to seem what they are not.

If you truly want to understand Islam, then look at Islam itself and not the Muslims!!

It must be noted that the verses in the Quran saying to fight back are just that. Fight back. Not fight unjustly. The Muslims were opressed and underwent horrific torture. They were eventually given the go ahead to fight back while abiding by the islamic rulings such as not killing women, children, elderly sick or damagaging property. As has already been mentioned by the previous poster. Also as she posted you can look in your Bible and see the same thing.

I would just like to say that Islam is a beautiful religion,i have now been muslim for 3 years and before i thought some of the same things that all of you are thinking and saying.but in actuality you’ve got to know exactly what you are talking about before refuting about a this subject.just because you see it on tv doent mean that its always right.and even if it is does that mean that because one group of fanatical people in a certain religion do some things, does that mean that you should take it out on the whole religion?put it this way,if there was a group of christians who where fanatics and doing the same thing that these terrorists are doing, should i hold it against all christians because of this?truth of the matter is there are alot of exremest in every religion and people to tend to get carried away and take things to far.Islam is a peaceful religion, but who said that the people fighting these days where actually good people and not fanatics?if i knew that islam was wrong or full of hate i wouldve never becam muslim myself.i studied and studied i found it to be the truth.people need to understand the religion before jumping to conclusions.if you dont understand it,find a teacher.but sont be so quick to judge.this is what causes hate.all of my neibors are christian, and people that i associate with all the time are christian, and i dont say to my self,(im not taking to them or being nice to them because they think im a terrorist)i show them the same respect as i would any body else, itreat them with kindness.
and just for adam who left a message on here, yes the Quran was revealed after the bible, but at the same time, you beleive in both testiments right?ok.the new testiment was revealed after the old.does that mean you dont beleive in the old?dont take it the wrong way but it is something to think about.

FACT: The prophet Mohammed’s farewell words to Muslims were,
“I was ordered to fight all men until they say, ‘There is no God but Allah.'” Said in March 632

HE did not say “fight back.” Mohammed introduced jihad as the mechanism for spreading Islam after his migration to Medina. He led raids against Meccan caravans. He directed battles. He oversaw the massacre of the Jewish tribe, the Quraiza, at Medina in 627.

These are not opinions. They are facts. Facts are sticky things. They cannot be simply dismissed as “out of context” or “not true.”

If we are going to have education, it requires open, honest conversation. Not dismissals or denials of fact.

  42. UmmZakariyya said

About reading an independant history of the Prophet Muhammad, not written by Christians or Muslims, how could you have such a biography of the Prophet without Muslims’ input?

Unless information is taken from the authentic hadeeth (documentations of the Prophet’s actions and sayings during his lifetime), then what is written is just the opinion of the writer.

The Christians of his time were infact the friends of the Muslims. They gave the Muslims sactuary in Abyssinia from the persectuation experienced from the polytheists in Mekka.

As I said in my previous comment, read the Sealed Nectar written by Safi-ur-Rahman al-Mubarakpuri.

Allen … thank you for your time today but you are simply not right. The hadith you are quoting was in fact mentioned several years before the death of the Prophet and not at all understood in the way you are trying to portray it. If your supposition was correct we would need to have another explanation for the thousands of churchs that remain today in traditionally Muslim territories which PREDATE Islam. Also we need to understand how literally millions of Christians and Jews continued to live peacefully in lands ruled by Islam. What you are doing is a dishonest practice of quoting something without 1) understanding how it was taught by the Prophet Muhammad himself and 2) without looking at the other evidences beside it in both the Quran and the teachings of Muhammad. I don’t think you would appreciate me doing that in regards to Christianity and I refuse to stoop to that level because I believe in dialouging with understanding. I am a scholar in Islamic studies who understands the context of these statements, the history which followed them and the practices of those Muslims who heard these words directly from the Prophet Muhammad. I think that you should consider asking a Muslim scholar before repeating statements that only increase the misunderstandings and misconceptions instead of trying to heal them.

Asalaam aleikum (peace be upon you) all.
Yes, Islam is promoting peace, and promoting tolerance.
Umar Ibn Khattab who was the second closest companion to the Prophet Muhammad, also the second leader after the prophet, said on his death bed “do not harm the non muslims”. He was killed by a non muslim. This is just one of the example how tolerant and mercyfull this religion was, and is, this day and age.

Yes, we know there are fanatics in every religion, but that doesn’t give any of us the right to generalize, and assume the worst of the people.
In Islam we are promoting to assume always the best of all people.
At one occasion a Jewis funeral was passing by the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. The prophet stood up showing respect. His companion asked him Why ,he is a jewis person,…. and he answered “he was Allah’s (GOD’S) creation too.” This shows a tremendous respect that the muslims feels for all God’s creation, which includes human animal, vegetation everything on earth.
Islam is the way of life for us, and guide us how to act and react to any situation.
We pray five times a day, remembering Allah (GOD). We educate our selfs in our religion and other aspects in life too.
We stand up for justice regardless age, gender, religion. This is the way we were guided by Allah, and his messengers.

Also, it is saddening that a few people who takes verses out of contest from the Quran and commit a sin which reflects on the whole Muslim community in a very bad way. But we stand firm and we continue to spread the truth.
Why people don’t hear about all the charity efforts that Muslims have done? …… because in Islam it is forbidden to show off. What we do is only for the sake of God, and we do not advertise how much money we spent on this charity or that cause. We just simply do it because this is our duty to help the needy and the oppressed, silently making sure our helping hand reaches everyone in their hardship. Furthermore, we voiced our strong disapproval about all the terrorist acts in so many ways, and we were not silent this time, because terrorism is a major sin in Islam.

This is Islam. You want to know more about it, just research, open your heart and your mind. That is what i did 7 years ago.
I didn’t become muslim b/c i married a muslim. I am a highly educated women who choose this life for herself and for her kids. A life which has value and future.

I admit, I don’t know much about Islam. Don’t know much about the sun either. I do feel the warmth of the sun on my face, I notice that I can’t stare at the sun because it’s bright, however I’ve never been to the sun so how can I say that it is hot. I can’t know for sure that it is other than by the certain clues that are given to me bright, hot, etc. I don’t know much about Islam, neither do I know much about Islamic charity. I do know that a majority of non-profit charity organizations around the world, emphasis on world, are currently supported or were originally supported by Christian organizations. I have heard of Muslim charitable orginazations working in Muslim countries serving Muslims, however not heard much of Muslim charities serving in areas where Muslims are in the minority.

Second point: What is up with this “fill-in-the-blank” phobia stuff. Homophobia, xenophobia, islamophobia, phobiaphobia. If you don’t agree with something in today’s world you must be afraid of it. How about “Christophobia” or “Judeophobia”. I would say either of those titles would work for the seemingly coordinated movements of Islam and humanism that are at work in our world today.
To our Muslim friends who are posting: One question I would like someone to answer is, does the Koran have a verse that speaks about loving your enemy. The Dr. on the show today kept referencing the Korans verses that spoke of mercy and love, however the context seemed to always be that Allah loves his followers, Muslims showing mercy to one another, etc. Does it say anything about loving your enemies? Not saying it doesn’t just curious. Luke 6:27 But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you” John 3:16 ” God so loved the WORLD….” The whole thing not just a portion of it. LOVE!

I did not get to hear all of the broadacast but what I heard was enough to make this statement. I usually don’t make comments to things like this but I just had to. I am a Christian who is saved, filled with the Holy Spirit, and righteous. I experienced being Muslim and studied Islam for a while, some of my family members are still Muslim. I became muslim for one reason–the peace it teaches. Islam teaches submission to God, and the Muslim people are to me more obedient and submissive to God than most Christians. It is more of a way of life to them than it is to us–the Christians. Yes, the Koran speaks of violence and the Bible speaks of violence. We should not spend our precious time on the differences of interpretations but spend more time showing LOVE to one another Muslims and Christians allke. Instead what I heard on the show was people quoting writings out of context on both sides. Yesterday is the perfect example of why we are in this situation today. This is how it all started. I became a Christian because I believe that Jesus is the Son of God and he died for our sins that through him ONLY–I will be saved. Since the Holy Spirit lives in me all I can do is live my life in LOVE. We need to embrace one another and teach one another as the Dr. stated. Then and only then will we be able to make peace. Why do we always search for ways to find the wrong instead of spending more energy on what is right-Oh I forgot there seems to be a difference of opinion here so there is no peace. The BIBLE says blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the children of God. Well, being called a child of God is the greatest honor I could have. I thank God that I experienced both sides maybe one day soon, God will use this experience to help both sides come to a peacemaking agreement in LOVE. Thank you for airing this type of program so we can hear what people think about an issue as hot as this. Live in PEACE and LOVE my brothers and sisters.

To respond to your other points:

    1) Quraiza, the Jewish tribe which had 600-700 men executed that you speak of, was a tribe that allied with the Muslims in the battle of the Trench – a battle where the pagan disbelievers tried to kill all Muslims by attacking them in their home city of Madinah. Quraiza had agreed to support the muslims but then switched sides in the battle and began attacking and beseiging the Muslims as well. When God gave victory to the Muslims in this campaign Muhammad asked one of the Muslims to judge Quraiza. He judged them by their own law, a law with which he was very familiar since he himself had been allied with the Jews for many years. This Jewish law required the death of all traitors. Interestingly, I don’t believe much “secular” law differs where even in America a traitor is to be executed.

So many people keep talking about the peaceful nature of Christianity but I can’t seem them showing a better example. Riding in the blood of Muslims and Jews to the knees of their horses in the Crusades, nearly killing off the indigenous population of 3 continents (Australia, South America and North America) in their attempts to convert them to the Cross and so on doesn’t at all sound to me like a peaceful force.

Furthermore, although many of today’s wars are secular based they are still fought by Church-going Christians. Is it ok to burn people to death with napalm if ordered by your secular officer but wrong in the name of God? Sounds a little deceptive to me.

    2) Also, I’m not sure where you have gotten your statistics but numerous surveys have shown Islam to be the fastest growing religion and contrary to your remark that people are being converted today at gun-point, I personally know hundreds of converts in America who choose Islam after extensive research. Many of these people left Christianity, some of them even seminary grads, for Islam. I can assure you that no sword or gun was involved when they CHOSE to become Muslim by their own free weill as thousands to every year in this country alone.

Part of the problem with the Koran is that it is not written historically, but rather by the length of the suras. It is completely illogical in organization

Mohammed and his men were rather peaceful when the were underpowered in Mecca. After they gather strength in Medina and then returned to Mecca, things changed.

Islam has a concept that later revelations abrogate earlier ones. The early more peaceful suras (that all the Muslims in the US like to quote) are “abrogated” by the later violent ones–the ones they like to omit.

    The Doctrine of Abrogation
Surah 2:106: None of our revelations do we abrogate or cause to be forgotten, but we substitute something better or similar.

On television in many parts of the Arab/Muslim world you see Jews depicted as apes or rats…where did this come from??? Answer—> it is an intrinsic teaching of Islam !!! (more examples could be cited, this is just one). This is NOT a religion of peace towards ones fellow man !!!!!

The Hadith (Bukhari, vol. IV, no. 524, pg. 333) The Prophet said, “A group of Israelites were lost. Nobody knows what they did. But I do not see them except that they were cursed and transformed into rats, for if you put the milk of a she-camel in front of a rat, it will not drink it, but if the milk of a sheep is put in front of it, it will drink it.” (1) It was illegal for the Israelites to eat the meat or drink the milk of camels while they were allowed to eat the meat and drink the milk of sheep. The prophet inferred from the rat’s habit that some of the Israelites had been transformed into rats. (2) Later on the prophet was informed through Inspiration about the fate of those Israelites: They were transformed into pigs and monkeys.

Christian friends–beware that lying is actually permitted in Islam.

Mohammed himself often lied and instructed his followers to do the same. He rationalized that the prospect of success in missions to extend Islam’s influence overrode Allah’s initial prohibitions against lying. A good example of sanctioned lying is the account of the assassination of Kaab Ibn al-Ashrf, a member of the Jewish tribe, Banu al-Nudair. It had been reported that Kaab had shown support for the Quraishites in their battle against Mohammed. It was alleged that Kaab had recited amorous poetry to Muslim women. Mohammed asked for volunteers to rid him of Kaab Ibn al-Ashraf. As Mohammed put it, Kaab had “Harmed Allah and His Apostle.” Ibn Muslima, volunteered for the murderous project on the condition that Mohammed would allow him to lie. With Mohammed’s consent, Ibn Muslima, went to Kaab and told him fabricated stories that reflected discontent about Mohammed’s leadership. When he had gained Kaab’s trust he lured him away from his house one night and murdered him in a remote area under the cover of darkness.

Muslims are permitted to lie to advance Islam–Christian friends, beware

This blog has really disintegrated into Islam bashing. For those that really want to learn and have open dialouge = try to understand what Islam really teaches as opposed to arrogantly believing that some videos and misleading misquotes are enough to understand this expansive and beautiful religion … for those people you are more than welcome to email me through my website http://www.alishehata.com. I am actually quite disappointed in the “peaceful” Christianity I have been exposed to on this blog which has boiled down to nothing more than hatefulness, being offensive and carrying of false tales. This might explain why so many Christians are leaving Christianity for Islam. By the way, I do actually have friends who are Jewish and Christian but that probably means nothing to many of you since you already “know” everything there is to know from the websites that preach hate.

I’m really ignorant in my understanding of Islam. Tell me where I am wrong, if I am. But my understanding is that it’s a works based religion. How do you ever know for certain if you have eternal life? How many works are enough. Jesus is a prophet in Islam, right? How can this, plus Jesus’ statement, “Be ye therefore perfect as your Father in heaven is perfect” (Matthew 5:48)? Don’t a works based religion, and that statement by Jesus, conflict?

How do you make payment for your sins? Moses is also a prophet, right? During his age, he sacrificed lambs, and their blood temporarily covered their sins.

Christianity understands that Jesus is the permanent Lamb of God, that Jesus’ death paid the debt for our sins. I don’t understand how a follower of Islam can justify themselves in front of a righteous, holy God.

We Christians have such peace in our hearts knowing we have a loving and saving grace through Jesus Christ. And isn’t that a greater treasure than any worry we have over a group of people who are unaccepting of this treasure? We can keep it for ourselves if those from Islam do not want it. Aren’t we the lucky ones to have this great peace of mind?

  61. truthseeker said

Before Christians demonize their own faith it would be better if they did so knowledgeably. Don’t believe and chime in agreement with the statements from anti-Christians unless you really know what you are talking about. Fact is (and it is easy to Google) the Pope John Paul II began issuing apology after apology for priest’s sexual abuse in 2001. And those apologies continue to rain down from the Vatican and bishops still until today. In my part of the world, there are still monthly pleas from the church for people to come forward in strictest confidence to name their accusers; many have and millions have been paid to those harmed. Here, there are panels of Devil’s advocates pouring through diocesan personnel records of the priests, looking for any and every impropriety and those are being dealt with harshly. Even some innocents are impacted and good priests are being lost. As for this being exclusively a Catholic phenomenon, it is not. It is just an easy target. All peoples; all Christians, all non-Christians need to be vigilant for this. It is a problem everywhere. Once again, easy to Google, news reports of Boy Scout leaders, pastors, deacons and youth leaders of every faith and those of no faith at all stalking MySpace for their prey. Just want to point out the Christianity is weakened every time we agree on a topic like this when confronted by the Devil. We Christians have to fight this every day; just one front in the fight for truth.

There are a few points I would like to shed some light on. First and foremost I would like to point out that Islam is a universal religion. The Christianity of Jesus Christ (peace be upon him) was not meant to be a universal religion. As the fundamental message and teachings were concerned, the true religion of Jesus (pbuh) wasn’t different from Islam, but it didn’t give a complete guidance for all aspects of our lives and all nations, and young and old. In the course of humanity’s existence God has sent messengers and prophets to different people and nations.

In the Quran God says: “There is not a nation but a warner has passed among them” 35:24
“And for every nation there is a Messenger.” 10:48

Jesus (pbuh) was one of them. He is the Messiah of the Children of Israel (Israelites). Like all Prophets those known to unknown all and us had different rulings concerning their nations but the same core message of worshipping God in His Oneness with no intercessors, partners, wives, or children etc. This was the base of all the messengers’ teachings. The teachings of Noah, Moses, Jesus, David, Muhammad, and all other Prophets (peace be upon them all). If we see and study their messages we will notice that whenever the different nations deviated and went astray a messenger/Prophet would arise and call them back to their Lord God, and each time a new law would be established but never a complete code that would lead to a single world-wide brotherhood. This code was sealed and fulfilled with the arrival of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

    The Quran says in 40:78

“And, indeed We have sent Messengers before you (O Muhammad); of some of them We have related to you their story and of some We have not related to you their story, and it was not given to any Messenger that he should bring a sign except by the Leave of Allah.”

All Prophets had their own miracles as we all know and one of those miracles for Muhammad (pbuh) was too call the people by reason and to the conscience of man. He was an honest I repeat for those comments before “HONEST” and was known among all who knew him as a man of truth, respect, and dignity, a comforter – a man of glad tidings. In Islam there is nothing that states a benefit and gain for a particular people of a certain region, age, or race. The Quran talks to people of all nations and for all time thus making Islam’s teachings universal in nature. I would like to point out some verses of the bible about some facts that Jesus said concerning to whom he was sent to deliver his message.

Jesus stated after choosing his 12 disciples to match the number of the tribes of Israel and stated to them in Matthew 10:5,6 “These twelve Jesus sent out after instructing them: “Do not go in the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter any city of the Samaritans; 6 but rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

Matthew 15:24 Jesus (pbuh) stated: “I am not sent but unto the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”

However Muhammad (pbuh) from the beginning of his mission it was clear that it was to all of humanity as it was revealed in the Quran 21:107 ” And We have sent you (O Muhammad) as a mercy for mankind and all that exists.”

Quran 7:158 “Say (O Muhammad): “O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the Messenger of Allah – to Whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He); It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in Allah and His Messenger (Muhammad), the Prophet who can neither read nor write (i.e. Muhammad) who believes in Allah and His Words (this Quran), the Taurat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel) and also Allah’s Word: “Be!” – and he was, i.e. Esa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), and follow him so that you may be guided.”

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh came to fulfill and complete not to destroy the messages of the other Prophets (peace be upon them all). Jesus (pbuh) even mentioned the spirit of truth and comforter who would come after him.

As he said in John 16:12, 13 “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now“.But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.”

Prophet Muhammad is the seal the stamp if you will of all the Messengers of Allah (God). Islam completed everything in the life of all humanity. It established rights of everyone men, women, and children.

The emancipation of slavery, Women’s Rights, The fair and kind treatment of Non-Muslims (as some of my fellow Muslims have mentioned before me).

Islam was the first religion to improve the treatment of slaves and to take steps to abolish slavery all together.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) made this clear as he said in his teaching found in
Al-Bukhari : “Narrated Al-Ma’rur: At Ar-Rabadha I met Abu Dhar who was wearing a cloak, and his slave, too, was wearing a similar one. I asked about the reason for it. He replied, “I abused a person by calling his mother with bad names.” The Prophet said to me, ‘O Abu Dhar! Did you abuse him by calling his mother with bad names You still have some characteristics of ignorance. Your slaves are your brothers and Allah has put them under your command. So whoever has a brother under his command should feed him of what he eats and dress him of what he wears. Do not ask them (slaves) to do things beyond their capacity (power) and if you do so, then help them.’ ” (Book #2, Hadith #29)

In Quran (2:177) “It is not Al-Birr (piety, righteousness, and each and every act of obedience to Allah, etc.) that you turn your faces towards east and (or) west (in prayers); but Al-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, the Prophets and gives his wealth, in spite of love for it, to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to the poor, and to the wayfarer, and to those who ask, and to set slaves free…”

And one last point which is the status of women in Islam. Before Islam women were seen as property something you inherit if she becomes a widow. For many centuries women were seen as second class citizens and Islam venerated and raised women’s status. So much so that man and woman are seen as equals in front of Allah (God).

Quran 4:124 “And whoever does righteous good deeds, male or female, and is a true believer in the Oneness of Allah (Muslim), such will enter Paradise and not the least injustice, even to the size of a speck on the back of a date stone, will be done to them.

Not only that but women were given 1400 years ago the right to inheritance of property and wealth from her father and her husband and the right to use her money as she chooses.

In the Quran 4:7 “There is a share for men and a share for women from what is left by parents and those nearest related, whether, the property be small or large – a legal share”.

Quran 4: 7 “And covet not the thing in which Allah hath made some of you excel others. Unto men a fortune from that which they have earned, and unto women a fortune from that which they have earned. (Envy not one another) but ask Allah of His bounty. Lo! Allah is ever Knower of all things”.

This authentic teaching (hadith) of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) states the honor and status of a woman in Islam.

(Al-Bukhari) A man came to Allah’s Apostle and said, “O Allah’s Apostle! Who is more entitled to be treated with the best companionship by me?” The Prophet said, “Your mother”. The man said. “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother”. The man further said, “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your mother”. The man asked for the fourth time, “Who is next?” The Prophet said, “Your father.” (Book #73, Hadith #2)

I want to stress to all those who believe that Islam is an oppressive and barbaric religion. Instead of lashing out and getting angry and attacking my of life ignorantly learn the true meanings of the verses of Quran and the authentic teachings of Muhammad (pbuh) if you are sincere and unbiased you might realize like I did when I researched Islam this not just a religion based on rituals and traditions but a way of life that teaches humanity how to worship the one God our Creator the Sustainer and All-Aware. And as I did 5 years ago with extensive research I came to see that Islam is the last revelation that our Lord Almighty has given us. As He the Sovereign states in the Quran 5:3 “This day, I have perfected your religion for you, completed My Favor upon you, and have chosen for you Islam as your religion.”

And if you are sincere and purify your heart you will see that as Allah the Almighty says in the Quran 17:107 “Say (O Muhammad to them): “Believe in it (the Quran) or do not believe (in it). Verily! Those who were given knowledge before it (the Jews and the Christians), when it is recited to them, fall down on their faces in humble prostration.”

Then you will realize that Islam is the truth and isn’t the stereotypical faith that so many proclaim it to be. This Islam the religion of Moses, Jesus and Muhammad (peace be upon them) men who all called to one thing believing and worshipping of One God the full submission to our Creator. Islam the belief that condemns oppression, torture, terrorism, and injustice to all that exists.

Let me start of by saying that if one looks at the true defination of the word Islam it means one who submits to the will of Allah swt. How can a person do this by force. If someone is going to open up the holy quran for the sole purpose of discrediting this beautiful way of life know as islam here are a few undistorted facts to ponder on… Allah swt say about the quran

He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are verses basic or fundamental (of established meaning); they are the foundation of the Book: others are allegorical. But those in whose hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking discord, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded in knowledge say: “We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our Lord:” and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding. surah Aal-e-imran verse # 7 (always those without understanding will find ways to distort its meaning)

Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors. surah baqarah verse # 190 (Allah swt never commanded anyone to transgress others)
Let there be no compulsion in religion: Truth stands out clear from Error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy hand-hold, that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things. surah baqarah verse # 256 (The islamic religion is not by force whether by the sword or anything else)
Now for those that use hadiths to discredit islamic here are a few authentic ones for you to reflect upon
The prophet Muhammad saw says Allah says O my servants, i have forbidden oppression for myself and have made it forbidden against you, so do not opress one another…related by muslin (so how can one say that the religion advocates violence and mayhem when its clear as day that we are forbidden to commit such acts)
The prophet Muhammad saw also said There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm… related by Malik in his muwatta

From the christian perspective there is a common denominator in all of this. Man is fallen and is not perfect. For this reason it is not logical to argue that Muslims are following the Koran and killing people b/c an Islam refuting that argument will simply say, “Well what about the Crusades, Ku Klux Klan, etc.” They will also say that the people who are doing the killings in the name of Allah are not representative of the whole; same thing a Christian would say about the Ku Klux Klan. Do I personally believe that the Koran preaches world domination by the sword, yes, but as stated earlier won’t even try to argue that b/c of the typical response. It’s a weak one. I would recommend that we flood our Muslim friends on this site with every verse of love in the Bible.

Fundamentalism, be it Islamic, Christian, or based on any other religion is the problem. A non-fundamentalist will not act out the scriptural exhortations to commit violence.

When God tells a fundamentalist to kill the infidels, or other non-believers, or heretics, or Women’s Clinic employees, et cetera, then they are a danger to others because they will act on that command.

When the government sanctions fundamentalism, as does Saudi, Iran, Iraq, and the other Islamic republics, then they are the danger to the world.

The Christian fundamentalists lack this sponsorship, so their violent acts are carried out by individuals or small groups.

That’s my take on this subject.

It would be nice if Dr. Shehata would at least admit that there are nations led by “Islamic Leaders” that openly preach and call upon Allah to destroy the Western World. Whether they are a true representation of Islam or not they are the outspoken voice of Islam. This isn’t some trick just portrayed by American media, but the horrific pictures that come streaming into the homes of Americans are directly from the Middle East. Dr. Shehata you told us that if we would listen we would hear the voice of the peaceful Muslim. The problem is that cries of “Allah Akhbahr” being shouted (insert AK-47 gunfire) from the terrorist faction of your religion are speaking louder than you are. You consider it hateful, but what perception would you have people to believe. We can take your word for it or we can take the word of those Muslims that rioted in Europe over cartoons, or the word of the President of Iran who advocates terrorism, or the word of Osama Bin Laden who is constantly threatening further terrorist action, or how about the word of the men who hijacked four airliners crashing three of them into buildings in the US. Actions speak louder than words sir. The actions of those who profess your faith are drowning out your message.

First of all Islam isn’t a religion it’s a way of life. Islam is peaceful and compassionate eventhough some Muslims these days aren’t showing a good example of what our prophet Muhammad has taught us. Islam came with mercy and a complete way to live with laws and rules. It liberated women gave them rights and showed us how to be fair and just with one another. Those people who like to live lawless hate what Islam represents. Islam is fair and just and you can see that when Muslims rule any country it treated its people with respect, justice and honor. A good example is Spain when the Muslims ruled the people of Spain lived in better conditions with peace and happiness under the protection of the Muslims, in fact they claim it was the best time in the history of Europe. They were not forced to convert. The Muslims didn’t do like what Isabella and Ferdinand did when they took over Spain. Islam is peaceful, study and read its history and the life of Prophet Muhammad more carefully. Don’t judge Islam by the behavior of some Muslims who don’t represent the true meaning of Islam. (There is no compulsion in Islam)

From my perspective, I see Christian bashing here from our Muslim participants in this discussion. If the Islamic population is happy and content in their belief; great. It is no reason I should abandon mine though. I shall still share my feelings of the great treasure I find in my faith of Jesus Christ and the Trinity; God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The gifts of a loving God are here for all who desire. Personally, I work every day towards the ultimate treasure; to serve eternity with the God in whom Christ is our Savior and gave us this opportunity through Him, with Him and in Him. I will never change my opinion as it would give me great pain to know I have lost this love. I live with the comfort knowing that as long as I live by the 10 Commandments and avoid the Seven Deadly sins, I will see the great light of our loving God through His grace and salvation and my justifications. I really only observe unhappy and angry people in turmoil embracing this Muslin faith option or no faith at all. As for me, this turmoil and hate will be left behind for others who do no accept the love of Jesus Christ.

The nationwide survey, one of the most exhaustive ever conducted of American Muslim attitudes, found that more than 60% are very concerned Islamic extremism will grow in America.
Thirteen percent said suicide bombings and other violence against civilians can be justified “in order to defend Islam from its enemies.” Among those under the age of 30, that 13% doubled to 26%.

I believe that the Koran is easily misunderstood by those who want to use it to justify their violence. The people who follow Islam are brought up in a violent world, just like the Christians who have made many of these ignorant posts were brought up to bash other people for being different. I was brought up Christian and will stay it till I die, and from what I know, nothing in the Bible tells Christians to be hateful of another religion. Muslims believe that killing someone is an act of martyrdom, but they didn’t kill those who opposed them. I believe suicide bombers aren’t rewarded by Allah, but are punished unless they truly are trying to stop those they killed from harming the Islamic religion.
Most Christians were brought up in mostly the same way. Those who join the religion are able to find a church to help them understand Christianity. I’m assuming that most violent Muslims are brought up differently from those Muslims who are of peace. Violent Muslims have the idea that if I kill someone and die in the process, then I’m a martyr and will be rewarded by Allah. But there is no great crusade against Islam. America isn’t in Islamic nations to harm Islam, but some think that and use the Koran to justify their “Crusade” against America and other Christian nations who “oppose” them.
“One bad apple will spoil the basket,” is completely true in this. Dr. Shehata was brought up in America and is a very good person. Oh, and he’s Muslim if you didn’t already know. He’s a doctor who helps people. He doesn’t send people to the ER, but helps them. So what of the helpful, non-violent Muslims? There are plenty of violent Christians, what of them? You bashful Christians are using hate to turn people against Islam, I think that’s not very Christian. I hate to think that I share a religion with you. Hitler was Christian, so does that make me a Jew-hating, socialist teenager? It’s the person who is violent, not the religion.

it has been proven through many educational, theological and historical studies that islam is the new name for the old religion of Baal. did you see the pictures taken by the National Geographic photographer about the sect in islam that actually has a ceremony where they take swords and cut their infants foreheads? i mean the very images were so disturbing to me to see a baby with blood pouring down it’s face while the mother cheers with a sword. it is so much like what you read in the Bible about the prophets of Baal cutting themselves to get their god to hear them. when i find the link to the website i will post it. i must say this when Jesus said he comes with a sword, it was to cut those spiritual things in us to do away with the bad and keep the good. and the sword he came with was the word of God.

    Bismillah ur Rehman ur Rahim.
unfortunatly all of our muslim scholer dealt islam in very rigid fashion, and made its base on the fear of God(Allah).since last 500 yrs not a single muslim author or scholer appeared who have tried to renew islamic teaching time to time.when Allah told the ablees to do Sajada(bowdown)to Adam he refused and disobey Him(almighty)second when the angel asked the adam who told all the names of things that were and will be until the day of judgement, meaning that what technology we are using and will use later on was taught to him.
From thse two incidence that i quated above , it is clear that Allah does not like disobedieance and for this reason He(almighty) send Prohpets and the teachings of all messangers were based on obedieance.in the last Muhammod(puh) came who concluded all the previous teachings in the form of HADITH and the Quran is continuation of all previous holy books and in the modern language , you can tell itis latest edition of message of Allah, It is obvious that in the presence of latest edition all previos editios will be value less but there importanceand believe on this is funda mental truth, so the islam is now the latest and more modern era relgion whose teachings are based on love , and knowledge, first love is for Muhammod who is the messanger , until we dont have love with him , it is not possible to follow the teachings, unfortunatly some of muslim scholers including Muhammod al wahab from arb pennisula tried to corner the messanger and directed all affliation to Allah(God)
one can not jump to get degree with out a teacher. The quran describes Jihad in different aspects and angle . but the muslims who were following Wahab took it to kill all non muslim including all those who help as a ticket to reach Junnah, This is one of the jewish planning against the muslims and ultimatly they are succeded,
